Students for a Free Tibet Calgary Presents: Why Tibet Matters, A Discussion with Tendor and Nima Dorjee
Many students often come to us pondering the relevance of Tibet today. Often, they want to know things like: Why the Dalai Lama matters? Why should we maintain hope for a non-violent solution in response to the Chinese government's oppressive regime? Perhaps you have even asked yourself: why should I care?
If you have asked these questions or others, make sure to come check out the event! As always, we look forward to seeing you there!
Tendor (Tenzin Dorjee) is the Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet (SFT), an international grassroots organization working for Tibetan freedom and human rights. Born and raised in India, Tendor jointed SFT in 1999 as a student at Brown University, later joining the organization's headquarters in New York. Tendor is a spokesperson for the Tibetan freedom movement and a frequent guest on the Tibetan radio stations, including Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, and Voice of Tibet. A published writer of essays, he won the International Campaign for Tibet's Light of Truth Essay Contest in 2002. In 2007, he was part of a team that unfurled a "Free Tibet" banner at the base camp of Mount Everest to protest China's plans to summit Everest with the Olympic torch.
Nima Dorjee is the former co-chair of the International Tibet Support Network - a global network of Tibet Support Groups. He is one of the founders and current editors of World Tibet Network News - a daily internet newsletter on Tibet. Currently, Nima sits on the National Board of the Canada Tibet Committee. Nima regularly speaks on the topic of Tibet.

51st Commemoration of the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising
This March 10, 2010 marks the 51st anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day, a fateful day in 1959 when Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa to protest China's invasion and illegal occupation of their country. One week later the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India. In the months following his escape, tens of thousands of Tibetans were killed as Chinese troops brutally crushed the uprising.
Despite more than half a century under Chinese rule, Tibetans still hold on to hope. Inside Tibet, people continue to take huge risks in their struggle for freedom, while outside, Tibetans and supporters are constantly confronting the Chinese government with the issue and demanding a resolution. These efforts are bringing real change for Tibet.

Stop Mining in Tibet: Continental Minerals Annual General Meeting Protests, June 20th & 24th
Tibetans and their supporters are planning protests in the lead-up to and during Vancouver-based Continental Minerals annual shareholders’ meeting on Wednesday, June 24th to intensify pressure on the company to cease mining operations in Chinese-occupied Tibet.
