Update: SFT Canada Calls on Harper to Stand Up for Tibet!

Students for a Free Tibet Canada has been busy this week urging the Canadian government to take a strong stand for Tibet as Prime Minister Harper embarked on his first official trip to China.

On Tuesday, our own Tenzin Lobsang traveled to Ottawa to represent SFT Canada at a press conference on Parliament Hill. Alex Neve from Amnesty International, Cheuk Kwan from the Toronto Association for a Democratic China, and Tenzin Lobsang, spoke on behalf of the Canadian Coalition for Human Rights in China and sent a clear message to Prime Minister Harper that Canadians expect him to publicly push the Chinese government on its dismal human rights in China and Tibet.

Meanwhile, Tibetans, Chinese democracy advocates and human rights supporters  gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and in Montreal to demand that Canada's trade relationship with China does not come at the expense of human rights.

We'd like to thank those of you who sent letters to the Prime Minister and to your Members of Parliment, calling for concrete action on Tibet. The Prime Minister received more than 300 letters from SFT Canada supporters like you!

Your efforts made a difference! MP Gerard Kennedy (Parkdale-High Park) specifically raised the case of Tibetan political prisoner, Dhondup Wangchen, in the House of Commons yesterday and asked if the Prime minister will call for his release.  To read the transcript, click here. From all of us at SFT Canada, thank you for your ongoing support of Students for a Free Tibet Canada and for your commitment to the Tibetan cause!
